What Does a Maid of Honor Do, Anyways?

What Does a Maid of Honor Do, Anyways?

If you’ve just been asked to be a Maid of Honor at a wedding, you probably have a few thoughts going through your mind right now. Your first feeling is probably excitement over the fact that you’ll get to celebrate your best friend’s special day! And after that, you might realize you have some questions. Namely… what the hell does a maid of honor even do?

If you’re wondering about this yourself, here are some of the most common Maid of Honor responsibilities that you might have to take on when you take on the role.

Plan the bridal shower and the bachelorette party.

Although sometimes families will want to host the bridal shower due to cultural or just personal reasons, if you’re a maid of honor you can almost always expect to plan the bachelorette party.

Go wedding dress shopping.

This one is usually a really fun and special, emotional moment! You get to be there for the bride while shopping for her perfect dress. The amount that you help will depend on what kind of shop or boutique you are shopping in but at a minimum you get to be a supportive sounding board to help the bride make a decision on her dress.

Be a point of contact for guests.

If a guest has questions about what they should wear, you might be the person they’ll reach out to so that the bride doesn’t have to deal with those messages or calls as she’s likely focusing on other elements of wedding planning!

Help with wedding preparation.

You might find yourself printing and folding programs for the wedding ceremony or helping put together centerpieces. If you’re a fan of DIY projects, this part of the role can be a fun and creative outlet!

Give a toast.

As Maid of Honor, you get to give a toast at the reception! It’s best to keep them short and sweet but it’s always nice to add some personal funny or sweet stories about your friendship with the bride and her relationship with her future spouse.

Be there for the bride!

Your main job as the Maid of Honor is to be a supportive friend to the bride and help keep all of the stress and messy details away from her so that she gets to enjoy her wedding to the person that she loves! This might mean helping packing for the honeymoon, following up with a particular vendor, or helping curate a playlist!
