Alternatives to a Traditional Wedding Cake
While cakes are one of the most common parts of any wedding celebration, you might not particularly like cake or you might be looking for a more unique alternative for your wedding dessert. Some may even prefer a savory option. Whatever you pick, remember that it’s YOUR day, and your dessert, like any other part of the ceremony, should celebrate what you and your partner like. If you’re looking for some alternatives to a traditional wedding cake, here are some ideas to get you started.
Donut Wall
For a sweet handheld option, consider donuts! You can plan on a tower of donuts, or create a donut wall. For this easy DIY option you simply need to attach pegs to a board of some kind – it can be as minimal or elaborate as you’d like it to be. Once the board is set up you can hang donuts off of the pegs. This usually works best for powdered donuts – varieties that are topped with frosting or have a filling may drip, especially on hot days. Donuts are also usually fairly cost-effective, so if you’re looking for a cheaper alternative to a wedding cake, donuts might be the perfect option for you.
Waffle Cake
If you love waffles and are having a brunch reception, a waffle cake is perfect for you! Typically these are made by stacking waffles and using frosting, whipped cream, or berry compote in between each layer for filling. You could choose to use liege waffles for some added sweetness. If you’re not familiar, liege waffles are a lighter and fluffier option with pearl sugar mixed into the batter.
Cheesecake
An often overlooked but delicious dessert is cheesecake! You can opt for a standard New York Cheesecake topped with strawberries (or whatever berry you like) or you can go for decadent chocolate cheesecake if you’d prefer. Whatever your favorite dessert flavors are, you can incorporate them into a cheesecake! You could even choose individually sized cheesecakes for each of your guests – these are great for a sit-down dinner or a buffet.
Actual Cheese
If you’re not a fan of cheesecake or sweet things in general, you might not even want a cake at your wedding! A creation made from cheese or a cheese board of some kind may be more your speed. You can stack wheels of cheese or something similar.
Cake Pops
If you like cake but are looking for a more unique option, consider cake pops! These can be made in a variety of flavors and colors. They’re smaller than a slice of cake but they’re generally far denser as they’re made from crumbled up cake mixed with a frosting of some kind and then coated with chocolate. These are a great option for a buffet as well!
